All Kinds of Beautiful Noise

Hey all! It seems as though I am not the only one that had a problem deciding what to write about. On my blog, I usually post about my recent adventures, or stuff that I think is awesome. However, I always seem to go back to posting about one thing, and that is music. Let me introduce myself:

Kira (Ki-ruh) noun
Lover of psychology and outdoors, reader of many books, avid music listener; running aficionado with Kookaburra laugh; Musician, college student, friend, and Mormon.

Okay, so I’m not really cool enough to be in the dictionary, and that’s certainly not everything about myself. Anyhow, I’ve know Megan (and Morgan, who posted earlier this week!) since we were wee little diaper-clad maidens. I moved to Jacksonville when I was almost a year old, and, sadly, moved back to Utah just after my third birthday. However, during the brief time that I was there, we were the best of friends! Look how cute we are:

I didn't really keep in touch with Megan, being 3 and all, but then, in ’06, my parents visited Florida in and the old ward and brought me her email! So we pretty much became pen pals and just picked up where had left off over ten years ago! J

Anyway, back to the matter at hand. I love music! I am a Music Therapy major at Utah State University, and am super excited to spend my life bettering the lives of others with music (if you don’t know what music therapy is, like most of the rest of the world, here’s the official definition, here’s a neat article about it, and here’s an incredible video that shows it in action). As far as I'm concerned, music is one of the most powerful languages in existence, and I know that it can do incredible things!

Now here is where I start to tread touchy territory. I do not like most of what is considered "music" in today's world. I have nothing against those who do, but I think it is ridiculous that most of the Top 40 on any given day is made up of 90% music that are essentially all the same song, 9% music that is more noise than music, and that 1% left over might be something that is actually decent. Every once in a while, something sneaks through, but it is not often (no offense to any of you who like Top 40, this is all my personal opinion).

To avoid the annoyance that tends to boil up in me after listening to a top hits radio station, I have more or less given up listening to the radio, and turned to the beautiful invention that is digital music!

Pandora and Spotify tend to be my favorite places to find new music. If you haven't checked them out, I highly recommend them, as well as other services like Grooveshark.
Also, find hipster friends. They tend to listen to awesome music! Haha. :) There is some incredible stuff out there, if you're willing to search!

Anyway, at the risk of no one liking what I have to offer here, I shall post some stuff that I've discovered and love. You may not love every genre i post, and I understand that... But give them a chance, at least.

- Scores for movies

“Time” - Hans Zimmer for Inception

So many great composers for movie scores out there! Hans Zimmer is only one of many incredible people in the field. Check out Danny Elfman and John Williams for more epic scores!

-  Soundtrack for your own life

“Your Hand in Mine” - Explosions in the Sky

Sometimes lyrics aren't necessary. I listen to Explosions in the Sky while I do homework! :)

- It’s called Classic-al for a reason

“Gymnopedie No. 1" - Erik Satie

It's just... Relaxing. Yes?

-  Lyrics can make the song

“For 12" - Other Lives

- Mellow = great

"Wash." - Bon Iver

It's almost haunting, right? But the best thing about it is how relaxing it is. Just let go of the stress....

- The words don't have to make sense

"Teardrop" - Massive Attack

The video's trippy... Sorry. Haha. But doesn't it just give you chills?

- A song can pull you out of a hard place

"Don't Panic" - Coldplay

This song helped me through a ton last summer, especially when I thought I couldn't handle things anymore.

- If you can think of it, someone's probably written a song about it

"I Like Giants" - Kimya Dawson

The woman sings true words. But who'da thought there was a song with giants and lemmings in it?

-Sometimes people surprise you

"Come Away to the Water" - Maroon 5(!) featuring Rozzi Crane

Totally unexpected, am I right?

- A little bit of piano can go a long way

"England" - The National

I just... Ahhh. Just listen. :) This was in The Vow, and it was perfect.

-Not all love songs are created equal

"Dustland Fairytale" - The Killers

Far superior to many other love songs. This is what real love is.

Well, I hope you enjoyed at least some of them! :)
Peace out, chillins, and remember what I told you! There is incredible music out there if you're willing to look!
